Ruth Harrison comes into the CGS with a unique story. Earlier this year, Ruth and her sister Sarah were drafted to the only two professional gaming teams in the UK, and it came as more of a surprise to Ruth than anyone else.
Since Dead or Alive 2, Ruth and Sarah have played the series together, and from the very start of their career they had a natural talent for the game. Ruth has always considered DoA2 the most fun chapter of the game's, and looks back on the period fondly.
Dead Or Alive 2 was the first fighting game I played since my sega days of Mortal Kombat. For me, it was a refreshing experience, with amazing graphics and a fun fighting system. The fact that I could knock my opponent off a waterfall or downstairs then follow after them and continue the fight was not only fun but revolutionary. I enjoyed the game so much so that when it moved platforms to the Xbox, so did I.
After DoA2 the girls moved on to DoA Ultimate, which is a hybrid of the original Dead Or Alive and Dead Or Alive 2. Although the girls did not start playing competitions here, their competitive career undoubtedly started here, as they played a lot of the top faces in the game you see today, including her partner Paddaman, and San Francisco Optx's Vanessa.
I'll never let Paddaman live it down, I was better than him in DOA: Ultimate haha. Of course things have changed now, but it wont stop me from ever rubbing that in his face! I remember playing Vanessa, she had picked Tengu and I had picked Helena, she definitly had raw skill. She beat me of course but I managed to get a few rounds against her haha. I played DOA Ultimate all under a different gamertag, I wasnt well recognised and I dont think I played enough to be remembered.

Strobe being drafted to London Mint.
As many gaming series do these days however, the game moved on after a short period of time, and the sister's had to move with it to keep up with the scene. Through DoA 3 and onto DoA 4, the girl's continued to train together, and maintained their growth in the game. It was in Dead or Alive 4 that Sarah Lou, Ruth's sister, decided she wanted to try her hand competitively. Having seen the CGS videos online after season 1, Sarah began to train vigorously for the combine, and Ruth was there to help her in the process. Although Ruth initially had no intentions of attending the combine, as their training developed, Ruth decided she would go with her sister to keep her company. Neither of them had any intentions of being drafted, as they assumed Snuggles and Ricochet would be a class above, and were merely attending for the experience.
I had initially only planned to attend the combine to keep Sarah company, with the intention of entering not even crossing my mind until around a month before signing up. Sarah had been playing DOA4 religiously for a year leading up to the combine, for fun, before it was suggested to her by a friend, Linex. I promised to go with her, to give support etc. As I played offline with Sarah, she suggested that I should enter too, afterall we both had more experience in the series than both Ricochet and Snuggles and both enjoyed playing. It would at least be an experience. I got in a bit of practise online and tried to get back into the swing of playing the game, I hadnt played for way over a year and I was rusty.
However, her intentions and her achievements did not lie hand in hand, as both sister's had an astounding competition, and trounced all the other players. Beating the Magnetik player Miss 5-0, the old Mint player Snuggles 5-1, and every other competitor she faced except her sister, Ruth was a sure pick for the draft.
I remember our first day, we were mistaken for staff and I dont think anybody took us seriously. My first match was against Snuggles, I was nervous but at the same time, I didnt have anything to lose and had no expectations of being drafted. After my match I remember looking around to find that barely anybody had watched. But that changed for the GM match, there were crowds of people and cameras. Afterwards I think everybody started taking me more seriously, I may have been unknown but I had been playing the game for longer than all the girls there and I even played online with some of the top players from America back in DOA: Ultimate, including DOA Master.
Drafted alongside Avtar "Padda" Paddaman, Ruth is confident she still has a lot to learn however, and is eager to play alongside the DoA superstar. Since the combine they have been training with each other almost non stop, and their work ethic has been remarkable. Although Ruth acknowledges Messy's amazing commitment to the game, she thinks Paddaman will surprise in LA.
Paddaman and I are definitly the underdogs in the CGS. Paddaman has a good knowledge of the game, and that is evident in our training sessions, he just needs to maintain his calm when playing against Messy. I couldnt say for definite who would win in their match but Paddaman is certainly dedicated.

Strobe, Sarah Lou and iPicaso post combine.
Their training has been incredibly odd however, as Sarah and Ruth both train in the same room. The two supposed rivals have struggled to get used to their rivalry, having played as partners for the past half a decade. Although there is a lot of friendly banter exchanging between the two, Ruth remains adamant that they are sisters before opposition.
At the end of the day, we are sisters and if Sarah beats me, Ill still be proud of her and will cheer for her to win at the CGS. Were both looking forward to our match and cant wait to go back to practising and playing with each other again, since the combine Ive really missed that. We no longer play in the same room, since getting wireless internet Ive moved my console into my room. Every now and again though, I sneak into one of Sarahs games and we form a tag team against people, haha.
However, with LA coming up in a week's time, the sky is the future for the two sisters, and they will need to pull out all the stocks if they wish to remain in LA for the world finals, and face up against the best in the world. Ruth has admitted she has huge amounts of respect for both Vanessa and Kasumi Chan, and considers them the biggest competition in the world at the moment, and looks forward to playing them in LA.
Like everyone in my team, Ive been watching Region 1 matches for the CGS, particularly the DOA Females. So far theres been a number of surprises, including Pheonix's win over Kasumi Chan and recently, Mystiks amazing match with Vanessa. The American players definitly show the most skill in the game and in the female division, Vanessa is undefeated. This year all the girls seemed to have stepped up their game and I cannot wait to see how we all fare the Worlds.
Ruth has come a huge way in such a small time with regards to competitive gaming, and her progress really shows that you can achieve whatever you want if you put your mind to it. Congratulations to both her and her sister, and we look forward to seeing you both in LA later this year!
See you next week Ruth
